good looking but almost useless!
by Joy Me on Nov 13th, 2004 at 4:50 AM:
I wanted to find the best sounding personal cd player. After a lot of research on the net and at shops, I decided to A/B test the slimX 550 and the Sony DNE800. I used modified (siver cables etc) Sennheiser PX200 headphones plugged directly into each player and listened to a "Carley Simon" Master CD. Based on sound quality alone, the slimX 550 is limp in comparrison to the dymanic and open sound of the Sony. Based on convenience to use, the slimX 550 is almost useless! There are no controls on the main unit so the headphones have to be unplugged and the remote plugged in every time to operate it. Listening via the remote is not an option as the sound degredation is shocking. I have no idea why others have given it a favourable review. They must not have listened to the Sony DNE800 which is also a delight to use! It is also cheaper! It also has over twice the battery life! Regards, joy.

The reviewer was pretty lazy in his description of this beauty of a player
-You must be aware that you are capable of updating the firmware on your iRiver. Now we can all enjoy such features as ogg music and different playback rates. Make sure you update today!
-You can use normal headphones in the jack if they fit. The extension cord is ugly.
-The player supports the most intuitive features found on any cd player available. Custom EQ with now Xtreme 3D (firmware required) will give you real life sound with headphones. The most customizable programming lets you change things such as backlight time, which ID3 tag info to display, sleep timers, etc. The player also boasts full support of folders, m3u playlists, and accurate and fast - fast forwarding.
-Dont overlook this player because the reviews were negligent. Check the prices, its down to $130 in some places, or $100 on ebay
Comprehensive unit
