Boo for the battery and keypad

by Chrys on Sep 21st, 2009 at 8:55 AM:

User Score: 6.png I love the phone for its versatility. However, since previously I used Samsung Star, I complained a lot about Omnia's keyboard. Star's version is much better. And I don't really like the battery life of Omnia....

Some things the Review missed...

User Score: 8.png Information the reviewer did not have access to that you should know:

1) GPS has since been unlocked, so Omnia can fully utilize Google Maps and other GPS software. [Free Caddie is a little golf program I use based on Google Maps technology.]

2) There is a camera flash - in fact its very strong and if you use it too close to your subject it will wash out the picture its so strong.

3) No arguments about the included software -- I blame Windows Mobile 6.1 for the most part though. Try a custom ROM -- Google and there are probably a dozen out there. Specifically related to finger use and touch screen sensitivity, try a custom ROM with Win Mo 6.5 baked in it and you'll be amazed. Fast, responsive, stable, and very finger-friendly.

A reviewer above mentioned the sound notification when battery charge is complete. Its true -- it cannot be disabled per se. However, you can either a) turn phone off during charge or b) enable "etiquette mode" by turning the phone face down so no sounds are made, or c) replace a WAV file (alarm2 I believe) with a "silent" one.

Why did I mention this last point in such detail? Its a strength of Win Mo devices in general -- you can customize the heck out of them!

Would I buy another Omnia? -- probably (esp. since I only paid $99 USD!), especially since I was "locked in" to Verizon for another 18 months anyway and needed to replace my phone with something. But personally I'd look at the new HTC devices closely that are Win Mo based but use the TouchFlow interface. The custom ROM I'm using on the Omnia has TouchFlow (a.k.a. Manilla 2D or M2D) baked into it, and I use it exclusively now. I prefer it over both Titanium (Win Mo 6.5 default interface -- doesn't really do much for me) and SPB Mobile Shell 3.0 (almost does too much!). TouchFlow has the right balance of making things easy but somewhat customizable.

This phone is feature rich. The features I need don't work.

User Score: 2.png This phone does not update GPS settings in Google Maps because the Verizon has it locked down. Texting is painfully slow and the phone hesitates seconds before responding to commands. XT9 is not accurate at all. Touch screen buttons are too small to use fingers (Like the iPhone) It's painful to add new contacts. It's a poor attempt to mimic the iPhone. I had a Treo and hated it. Now I miss my Treo. The camera is great and the photos are great, but I don't NEED those features.

I will never buy another Samsung phone

User Score: 2.png This is the worst phone I have ever used. From a terrible touchscreen to the fact that the phone plays a tone when it is done charging (and you CANNOT turn of this feature). Talk about clunky! The touchscreen is reminiscent of first generation touchscreens! Except where it is so hyper-sensitive that it dials Zimbabwe from inside the case. The software is nowhere near intuitive, you cannot make a voice-dial call with the touchscreen locked. This phone is junk.

best phone ever
