Agree with Serious Quality issues

by NanceWS on Jun 19th, 2009 at 10:09 AM:

User Score: 2.png I bought the XDE500 4 months ago when my 4 year old DVD player finally started to go on me. It worked great until this morning when it displayed the same green checkerboard pattern that others have described. Considering that all other DVD players I've bought have lasted a minimum of four years, this one is a cheap piece of junk. Don't think I'll buy from Toshiba again.

MAJOR quality issues

User Score: 2.png It looked great for a DVD player on my 1080p capable 42" Plasma... until it died. After about two months it just started to display a green checkerboard pattern while playing DVDs. I am going to see if I can get it replaced through the manufacturer. Although it was impressive while it worked, it didn't take long for it to bomb.

EXCITINGLY IMPRESSIVE !!

User Score: 10.png A few weeks ago I watched a movie trailer (wolverine x-men origins) for the first time in HD format and I was sold. The Clarity and Detail embedded in this Format was Astounding to me. I knew then I had to have a HD player the ordinary format just would not satisfy anymore.
like a lot of people I have a lot of DVD films and I had to consider do I want to replace my collection with the BluRay equivalent at Great Expense or find a machine which could upgrade their quality to that or something akin to that HD Quality which I had seen on the Trailer.
I read many a review of the Toshiba X DE 500 Some excellent. Some Average. Some scathing. But there was something in the Positives and the manufactures reviews that got my curiosity going on overdrive.
The same kind of overdrive that had me battling between this machine and a Sony BluRay which was a Few Dollars More anyway I was all set to get the, dare I say obviously superior BluRay player, until I checked on the price of the DVD movies for this machine.
The Toshiba won that round for me.
And I have to say I am GLAD it did.
The Xde-500 is Easy to set up. Easy to use. And the 1080p up scaling capability is just Awesome. I mean it really does improve the Film Quality by as LARGE margin. The added bonus of X-ED which gives Shaping Color and Contrast Enhancement REALLY WORKS and adds another depth of quality to DVDs. And the Sound Quality is as Good as the picture up scaling. I am SOOOO Very impressed. !!! I couldn't believe the Quality and Detail which was suddenly present in 'The lord of the Rings'!! It was like I was watching a DIFFERENT and New Movie. I sat mesmerized from beginning to End. Then phoned my friend to come over and watch it so I could get a second opinion so I could be sure of what I was seeing.
He was as Awe Struck as me and has now gone out and brought the same product.!!
I know it ain't no BluRay.
I have seen BluRay at work in shops and their quality is Unique. I must admit I find myself wondering how the hell does BluRay manage to top the output of the Xde-500. But I know they do...
However I have to say I Don't Care for now. To me this is one Awesome bit of Equipment that has breathed new life into my DVDs I accept that it will only produce the goods with DVDs that are already of good quality. It won't turn a Mini into a Porsche but when it drives that Porsche the turbo ignition it brings to it will throw you back into the Seat.
Hook up the HDMI cable for full benefits to a HD ready TV and grab some Surround Sound Speakers and as long as you aint expecting to throw away your BluRay collection I will be surprised if you aint Ranting about it like me right now.!!
I say with confidence Get it. You won't regret it

Excellent DVD Player for 720p

by DigitalB on Jan 1st, 2009 at 10:04 AM:

User Score: 8.png I've tried this DVD player on multiple LCD panels at native resolutions of 720p and 1080p, and to be honest, I think it worked its up-scaling magic best on 720p displays. 1080p just seems too far to go for a DVD. If you sit far enough back from the 1080p display, you wont notice the up-conversion, but then that defeats the purpose of having a hi-res display. I've paired this DVD player up with a 32AV502U and it looks great. Once the price of Blu-Ray becomes more realistic I may consider it, until then, This DVD player will do just fine.

My biggest complaint about this DVD player has to be the disc tray itself. It is designed in such a way that the only way to get the disc out is to poke your finger into the hole in the middle, or push it up from the bottom side. A slimmer tray which allows you to grab the disc on its edges would be nice.

Overall a great DVD player for the money. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking to survive on a diet of DVD and LCD until Blu-Ray is a bit more mainstream.
