I love mine
by Ray on Jul 9th, 2008 at 9:31 AM:
I had an Aeron chair at work for nearly 10 years and never had a problem. I started a small company and was ready to purchase several for my office. I happened to be in Vegas last year when they were having some type of convention. I was setting up an office so it was perfect timing. I managed to slip into this showroom where they had all kind of ergonomic things. I probably sat in 100 different chairs. I loved almost all of them, but none more than the Freedom. I bought 4 for my office and will be looking to purchase more chairs now that we are growing(that's how I found this site).
One recommendation I found when researching where to buy... buy from an authorized dealer. The warranty is incredible, one chair for life(basically) but no warranty if you don't buy from an authorized dealer!
I called Humanscale to get the full skinny on the warranty program. I happened to mention ShopSeating.com. RED FLAG WHEN PRICES SEEM TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE! The rep proceeded to inform me of all of the issues with this site. Basically they are not an authorized dealer, Humanscale will not stand behind chairs from these folks, and Humanscale is adamant that you not purchase from them. I'm sure it's not just this site, but be careful. Make some calls.
They didn't say that just to get me to buy from them, they actually told me the AUTHORIZED online stores are the cheapest. I asked for a recommendation but she couldn't give me one, so I asked who the last dealer she talked to was and that is who I bought from(ergodepot if you care).
Hope this helps someone else out there.
Excellent chair for "fidgety" people
by Witch Doctor on May 5th, 2008 at 2:22 PM:
I fidget. No, it's not due to coffee; it's just my working style. The two things about the Aeron are that it's no better than a cheapie office chair if it's not adjusted properly, and it's hard to adjust/reconfigure, which is essential for a fidgeter like me. Enter the Freedom chair. I can reconfigure this baby in seconds. The Freedom's arm and back adjustments make a big difference for me. Support is excellent and it's very easy to find the "sweet spot" on this chair. I highly recommend the headrest, as nothing beats the ability to lean back for a minute or two and just chill out. The metal frame is very high quality -- the chair weighs more than you'd think -- and the plastic seat pan and back are good quality. It doesn't have as many adjustments as the Aeron -- the lack of a locking backrest angle is a big one -- and the support is "different" from the Aeron, which is sort of a subjective thing. The automatic backrest tends to have more "pushback" than I'd like, though this can be helped by moving the seat pan forward so I have more leverage against the backrest. Me, I like the ability to quickly readjust the chair, so I went with the Freedom for the intuitive adjustments.
Will not buy Freedom Chairs anymore
by Ted on Mar 21st, 2008 at 10:50 AM:
My company has purchased over 600 Freedom chairs both with and without headrests. Some of these chairs were among the first Humanscale ever produced. The overall durability of these chairs is pathetic. The current product is much better, but on the older chairs we've had to do major repairs several times. Those repairs included, replace every plastic arm cup (breaking off at the pins), replace almost every cracked/split arm pad several times (they finally made a tougher pad), replaced all of the wave fabric (due to fabric separation from foam/gel, fuzzing, and pilling)(the replacement Vellum is not much better), replaced over a hundred seat pans that broke, replaced wheels that get impacted with hair and won't roll (never seen on any other chair), replaced almost all "toothed ratchets" that hold up the arms in the back (originally cast metal and not machined), many times seat adjustment won't move after seat pan is replaced. I requested a repair manual, took these chairs apart and worked on them myself until I became sick of doing their warranty work for them. Now, I have over 20 in the dealer/repair shop constantly. By the time they get 10 fixed, I have 10 more broken. And yes, the gel seats appear to be "harder" than the plain foam. Many employees complain that both are too hard. We don't plan to buy any more Freedom chairs. I give them a 1 because 0 is not a choice.
No problemo

I've had this chair for over 3 years in my home office. Never had a problem and concur with the reviewer before. Am going to be purchasing another one now for my other office and ran across this review.
The chair is solid and very comforting. I sit in the chair to do quite a bit of PC work. My only regret is not getting it in leather.
