A Perfect Second Computer

by mckellyb on Jul 19th, 2009 at 8:43 PM:

User Score: 10.png I bought the PCV-W20 I'm typing this on back in '03, for my wife's use so she didn't have to trek upstairs, which was a physical problem for both of us, her moreso than me, for a while.

Beware, fun hobbies can kill you, if you're doing it right.

As a bonus, my computer room could always be the disaster it was. I'm a computer guy, so there were always things in various states of assembly/disassembly.

However, since then, this PC has become our main PC, covering 80,000 miles, while on, in the process. My computer has been in storage since 2005. This one has been to 49 states and 10 provinces, and hasn't been off longer than five minutes in the past five years. I use it to track, real-time, GPS on MS Streets & Trips, and the Cummins ISB motorhome engine via an engine computer interface. This is why it's always on. It has been shaken nearly-to-death over Alaska's extensive gravel road network.

Shortly after purchase, the screen light burned out...I chalk this up to purchasing it at Fry's. I've never had good luck with Fry's purchases, but sometimes it's the only place you can see/touch/purchase something.

If it ever fails, again, I'm going LED...problem permanently solved. I've put a larger hard drive in it, and more memory, but otherwise, nothing. The USB ports, even though they've had cables plugged in/pulled out hundreds, if not thousands of times, are just fine. If it ever dies, I promised my wife I'd find parts to fix this one, or find a newer version.

One thing you don't normally find...the keyboard has a very nice feel, though that's subjective. Some don't care, but I'm extraordinarily picky about it. I never, ever, expected to use it in this manner, but it's been the perfect machine for it. It's a desktop/laptop hybrid, and yeah, it doesn't travel well under your arm, but it's a full-blown PC, and uses, for the most part, standard PC parts, so you're not going to get ripped for common things like RAM or a HDD.

Don't buy one

User Score: 2.png From a tech point of review when repair is needed, it's near impossible to repair. Labor cost to tear down the system to replace the monitor is as much as buying a new notebook.

EXCELLENT PC, Great Style and Performance

by Bob on Aug 20th, 2007 at 4:50 PM:

User Score: 10.png One of the best computers we have ever owned, it takes up about the same space as a laptop and folds up to display a clock with effects when not in use. Instant On, no boot up or waiting so its great for kitchen, bedrooms, home offices or anywhere! We have one in our kitchen area for the kids to use, wife uses it to lookup cooking ideas, I have one in my home office with a cable to our stereo system for music and entertainment....SONY STYLE!!

Just A Pretty Face?

by zumziel on May 23rd, 2003 at 9:03 PM:

User Score: 7.png When I saw this model, all other desktops and notebooks seemed so dull and very old-fashioned. PCV-W20 really futuristic looking but ...rocks? Well, I might say the performance is average. Got better to offer than average notebooks, but no match with the desktops. There's no A drive by the way... I should say, this computer is very stylish, useful for simple people. But those gamers or graphic designers, better off go with the bulky PC... excfept perhaps fashion designers...
