I'm pissed up with my Compaq Presario Laptop

by Rey Antoni on Oct 19th, 2009 at 12:12 PM:

User Score: 2.png September 2008 when my daughter who worked overseas sent me a new Compaq laptop as a birthday gift. I took care of it more than my precious Persian cat. Three weeks ago I noticed a thread-like linings at the bottom of the laptop's screen. I disregarded it at first thinking it would be gone after I shutdown the unit. But to my dismay, 3 or 4 more thread-like linings were added to the previous one, almost covering the taskbar when I opened the laptop the next day. Each time I opened my laptop, more linings were added and they are in different annoying colors. I brought my laptop from 1 technician to another and all of them said they can't do anything to fix it since its a factory defect or they haven't found a solution to it or it's cause. And the store where my daughter bought the unit is a 1 hour and 40 minute plane ride from my home. Today, the linings have covered most of the taskbar that I have to guess where the sites or folders are that I have recently opened. Then, I noticed that the screen would flicker for several seconds making it hard for me to read the text. And to make the problem worse is that some of the linings have started to accumulate at the topmost screen. I have counted 4 lines today and I would guess more will be appearing tomorrow and the next days. I am afraid in a matter of days the linings will cover the entire screen of my laptop's monitor. What's happening with my 1 and only COMPAQ laptop? I heard from 1 of the computer technicians I consulted with that he met 1 case as mine with the same brand. Hers was worse than mine because the linings have already covered half of the screen's monitor. I wish Compaq manufacturer can read this and do something that may solve this problem.

complaint against hp- compaq service

by mohit singh on Aug 5th, 2009 at 8:52 AM:

User Score: 10.png I brought a Compaq laptop less than a year back and it is still under the warranty period. It cost me Rs21,000 for the laptop.

The LCD screen is leaking from inside and there is no damage from the outside to the screen.

I went to Indiranagar Service Center, in Bangalore on 3/08/09. They are asking Rs15,000-18,000, which is highly inappropriate as I'm a student and the laptop is still under warranty period.

I was forced to post this complaint on a consumer forum in spite of repeated request and pleading, they would not listen.

Thank you,

User Score: 4.png I have had this computer for 4 months now.

I would not recommend it. I have owned many Hp laptops, so I know what I'm saying

This is why:

You can have a great computer all round, but with such a poor screen with zero viewing angle - what's the point!

Not to mention the poor sound control buttons which lasted a month?

Bottom line everything else can be great, but if you can't see what you're doing, what's the point. The screens on by TC 2400 and TC 4200 were much better

Nice but the screen is no good

User Score: 4.png The general usability of this notebook is very good, the keyboard is excellent. The size and build is great. Unfortunately the screen is very poor with poor viewing angles, low contrast and unrealistic colors.

Good specs but design could have been better

User Score: 8.png After 2.5 months with the HP 2510p here are my second impressions and some critique. To summarize: good specs but design could have been better:

* The battery lasts longer than expected when the backlight is sufficiently dimmed. Using the standard battery I could get close to 7 hours writing text and editing Visio diagrams in Vista.

* The brightness auto-adjust is nice when working in some conditions but it lacks damping. That is, when working on a train, every passing electric line pole causes the screen to brighten briefly. Also, hand movements (I have white skin) on the keyboard may cause the screen to adjust brightness.

* Screen brightness is great, even outdoors

* The touch-sensitive volume adjustment is barely usable

* I miss a middle mouse button for Linux. Pressing the big rubber buttons together under the space bar is difficult

* The fact that the keyboard is black and the overall design has crevices means that dust accumulates and is very visible.

* The microphone works wonderfully. The unique speaker gives great sound. Great for Skype.

* ACPI works well in Vista and more or less well in Linux: under Ubuntu+Gnome you'll probably have to change to HIBERNATE_MODE=platform. At the time I write this there is a bug in KDE that will leave you with no backlight after suspend-resume. This means that Kubuntu won't work perfectly on this laptop yet.

* Something probably has to be tweaked to get the SD card reader to run in Linux

* Assembly deficiencies: the track point blue tip was hard to insert because the protective black sheet under the keyboard is misaligned. The track point tip touches the screen when it is closed and leaves a mark. There is also a bump close to the touch-sensitive area above the keyboard near the screen. This area rubs against the screen frame and leaves a 3cm mark just left of the HP logo. The PCMCIA guide rail is not properly fastened to the motherboard. The fingerprint reader's electronic board is not fastened properly to the upper hand-rest plate and rubs against PCMCIA cards when they are inserted or retrieved (ugly friction sound). I plan to send my laptop back to have it fixed. But hey guys, this is made in China, right? We shouldn't ask for too much, even from an HP business-level computer that wasn't designed to be an object to fall in love with.
