Probably poor quality manufacturing control
by Don on Mar 25th, 2008 at 11:50 AM:
Like many other products, I lucked out and got one that works great. But it sure sounds like there are some lemons out there. So if you're going to buy one of these, buy from a dealer that takes returns, and if you get one that doesn't work, keep returning them till you get one that does. DON'T buy from any dealer that makes you return it to the manufacturer if something goes wrong in the first few weeks. Check your receipt carefully for return policy, what the salesman says and the official policy can be two very different things.
Stay Away from this product

This unit was purchased to replace both VCR and DVD players in our family room. We wanted the combo unit to burn our old VHS tapes to DVD as well as to be our primary movie player. I will skip all of the other issues that are undesireable because they are a moot point due to the fact that this unit will only play about 1 out of every 10 DVD's we load into it. The "Unknown Disk" error is displayed with almost every store-bought or rental DVD. This player simply does NOT work. I have put off dealing with the issue and instead use a $49.00 department store DVD that never fails. However I will contact LG and goe throught the painful process of trying to get it fixed.
Disappointing

I purchased this unit March 2007 from Best buy. Was looking for a combo unit that had up convert capability as well as HD tuner built in. I have it running into a Denon AVR2807 via HDMI. I too have experienced some of the pain in other reviews. It has a very slow boot up process. Occasionally, the system actually hangs up and I have to unplug to reset it. The LG manual warns of connecting to other HDMI devices besides a TV which leads me to believe the unit is somewhat prone to problems when a more complex configuration is used. I've also experienced the issue with it not being able to read DVD's. I get tons of DVD's from Netflix that this unit cannot read but the 99.00 player in the room reads them just fine. Like I said, disappointing. I'm coming up on 1 year. I'm planning on calling LG and go thru the painful 69.00 service gig to see what they can do.
The Worst

Do not buy this "super read" unit, it is super garbage, it has the same "unknown disk" error as well documented by reviewers on the LG RC199H model. It has stopped reading any DVD's, this widespread common problem is evidently due to a faulty LG part that they are only willing to fix for around $80,they are not willing to stand behind their product, do not buy any LG products, period!
