Mostly happy

by Russell McLaughlin on Aug 23rd, 2007 at 8:58 AM:

This remote programs acceptably very fast with the defaults (not like the Pronto that took me many days to set up). Total setup about an hour. I always keep it on the charger and have never had it run out of juice. Annoying that there is no fast forward and rewind hard keys. I use these lots and don't like having to tap the screen to get the buttons to appear, and then visually watch the screen while I make sure I press in the right place. Worst of all, the help button is in the top of the screen close to other buttons. If I slightly am off course and press help, it always turns of my front projector which has like a 5 minute cool down before it can be turned on again. Sucks but perhaps is more a projector flaw than a remote flaw.

One nice thing is the infrared is plenty powerful. It doesn't seem to matter what direction I point it, even 180 degrees away from the rack, it always works. Perhaps this is because of the white walls in the media room or the large 10 foot front projection screen reflecting the infrared. Dunno.

Looks cool and is easy, so I give 8/10. 2 points deducted because of button issues as above, and because it maxes out at 8 units until you buy the RF extender (I'm maxed out now and cant used the infrared room light controls I just installed).

Harmony 1000

I wish I could say it's worth the money, but it is not. I bought this remote because my components are in a closet and I was limited on functioning thru the walls via RF Extenders. Battery life is weak, make sure to recharge daily. Constantly have problems and have to revive thru the internet. When it goes down it literally takes 20 min to reboot. Are you kiddin??? The pros: very cool looking and great conversation piece, also great when working properly. Research other remotes before investing a portion of your kids college fund.

Happy Overall

This has been a great remote for my family. You should be able to find it for under $400 dollars if you shop online or look for it to go on sale. The screen looks great and is easy to see in the sunlight. Just make sure to have this docked otherwise the battery life will sneak up on you.
