bigger specs are better

I've got a DV9725TX with intel CORE 2 DUO 2.4GHZ, 4GB RAM, 2x250GB HDD, with the HD DVD, using on my boat, it's great. Surfing the web, video chatting on skype, using messenger, running excel and outlook all at once, this "beast" doesn't even flinch. I even use it connected to a GPS with maps, its entertainment, information, navigation and soon to be a fish finder (echo sounder) as well. (No vista drivers yet !!) Amazing!

Very Bad Experience

by RPB on Dec 21st, 2007 at 5:19 PM:

Purchased the HP Pavilion online from the HP website.

Total cost > 2K.

When the order arrived, it did not include a license key for MS Office. I contacted the HP Sales support. They punted me to Technical Support. I spoke to Michael at customer support. He told me that he was the "owner" of the problem and that he would call me after the weekend. after spending 1.5 hours on the call and on hold with him.

He never called back. 4 weeks later a called HP support to find out what was happening. err.. Nothing was happening. After working my way through their escalation system, I spoke to a case manager named Steve Har. He told me that if I did not have the product key that there was nothing that they could do. I explained that I did not get one. That did not seem to impress him. Bottom line: if it was not shipped, you are out of luck.

I now need to contact Chase to try and dispute the charge.

I have never had a worse experience with technical support. They were deceptive, incompetent, unresponsive and ultimately useless.

This is the last HP product that I will purchase. I urge you to be careful, if you insist on an HP, you should purchase it at a bricks and mortar store.

I went cheap at Fry's for a 17", 1.9 GHz Turion x2, 1 GB, 160 GB & vista home. Vista is a small speed bump from XP, especially if you turn off the overly sissified User Account Control. Vista is much more anal than XP about file searches, can't ever search the whole hard drive, though search is vastly improved in ease of use and speed. Had to return two of these notebooks because the net port went out after a week each. Third time is the charm. Fry's trusted my troubleshooting and gave me a new one right away each time. I use it with an external keyboard and a 20" monitor, great having the extra screen space. The 1 GB works fine with several apps up. I might pop for the extra 1 GB module on the net, maybe $40. I believe this model has an extra hard drive jack inside, I may pop for another drive, and then backup on the road is simple. The Norton is coming off as soon as its free trial is over. Norton and MacAfee have been true bloat ware for years. Sort of like driving with 3 or 4 spark cables disconnected. Probably find a newer smaller antivirus, they try harder to please.

I really like the tiny flush mounted switch on the edge of the touchpad, it allows one to disable that. No fun when the cursor flies off screen because your hand touched the touchpad while typing. I don't like the audio in/out connectors in front, they're in the way. I don't like the external video "D" jack on the side with no screw holes. Should be in back and with screw holes to hold the cable.

The appearance of this notebook is the best I've ever seen, very nice. Makes me want to dedicate a dust rag just for it. The wireless switch and light is very difficult to see and should be up on top beyond the keyboard like on the dv8000. Nice tuck away slot for the DVD remote control. Love the one slot for 4 different memory module formats, too cool. This notebook runs pretty cold, managed a bunch of 166MHZ Pentium IBM notebooks that couldn't sit on your legs for more than a few seconds.

I don't know what all of these people are crying about vista for, I find it easy to use and an improvement over XP.

The worst laptop I have ever had

by Lucas on Sep 21st, 2007 at 10:29 AM:

I have a dv9000 HP laptop 1Meg RAM, 1.8GHz, Vista. It is absolute junk. I have had this laptop for 6 months. The wireless switch no longer works (always off), laptop will periodically show a yellow line, and require several reboots before it will come back, can't playback any video, battery life is horrible.
