Love It (and I hate computers...)
by Brian on Jul 19th, 2007 at 3:07 PM:
I despise computers. I'm 32, so I am part of the 'didn't grow up with them but look young, so better be an expert' crowd. I don't play video games, don't collect DVD's and the technology of my book collection hasn't changed once in my three + decades.
A few years ago, I learned how to use an iPod, sort of, and computers became an unfortunate part of my life. As an avid cyclist and snowboarder, 2.5 hours of teeth-clenching and hair pulling were close enough to a fair tradeoff for having another album in my library. A digital camera slimed its deceitful way into my group of possessions and before long, I had a Dell (I called it Adolph) full of my things. I had often wished Adolph had presence of mind so that I could subject him to the fear, pain, frustration and overall hopelessness I was forced to endure at his evil keys and mouse.
When he finally crashed (with the name Adolph and our past problems, I have to say I'm glad it happened), I broke down and bought a Mac - the second cheapest Mac book, the one with the DVD burner and 120 Gigs. The folks at the shop were able to transfer my files without too much trouble, but explained that I would have to organize them myself. Great, I though, my two weakest points... organization and computers. I sat down with my new machine, a large can of energy drink and very low expectations, considering my tasks also included getting my old internet connection to work and hooking up a printer.
Before the energy drink was done, the new iPod I was given by the Apple store (I'm a student, or will be within the next few weeks) was running my songs and I had scanned in the printer test-page. I was online and my photos were imported - a cool experience, similar to life flashing before my eyes, minus the death part - and I was and am able to run as many windows as I possibly can. A friend who was with me, more for the guaranteed freak show than moral support asked me to burn a CD for him, a feat which has always seemed slightly less difficult than alchemy, and 20 seconds later, he had a copy of a Misfits concert from 1983. Simply amazing...
The coup de tech, however was when my cell-phone's organizer not only synched with my Mac, but did it without costly download, without wires, without said cell phone leaving my pocket. Take that, Adolph!
Now, in case it hasn't come across, I am no techno geek. I can't speak to video cards or expansion ports, good or bad. Most people twice my age have forgotten more about hard-drive configuration than I will ever know. I have no clue how it stacks up to Macs of the past, present or future. I do know that it works, and that is the best thing I've said about a computer since the Nintendo I had 20 years ago (which shortly thereafter took an unexpected and fatal flight across the room when I died one time too many at Super Mario). Thanks to my Mac book, it looks like I will be able to life a normal and fulfilling life. Dare I say, I enjoy using it. I am confident this one will not be flying anywhere outside of my messenger bag anytime soon. And it can count on a more complimentary name than 'Adolph'.
New purchaser of Macbook pro
by Mike9says on Apr 30th, 2007 at 10:29 PM:
Switching from a Windows PC is a chore. I purchased the Macbook Pro expecting as advertised that my software would be installed. Worse many, many hours were required to download system updates though I don't know if ithey nstalled or where.
Have problems as most WMV, AVI and MPEG files won't open.
I bought iLife and iWork and the express video editing program but can't find it on my computer. No clue how to connect my analog HI 8 video camera.
I've only had it for three weeks but disappointed to find it's so difficult to learn to use and that the documentation as well as the help and online help is so difficult.
Anyway's it is too early to tell, but I can say it is unexpected that the latest Apple would be so difficult to learn how to do the simplest stuff.
In every aspect, best computer I've ever owned!
by Josh Gard on Apr 25th, 2007 at 7:33 AM:
This is my first Mac. I've used Macs in the educational environment for many years, and use Windows PCs at work, and have always had a preference towards PCs at home. So when I decided to replace my trusty Dell notebook with a new MacBook, it was a very uncertain step. I didn't know what to expect by making the full changeover to a Mac-shop at home. But I can say this was the best computer purchase I have ever made! Every day I find new little things about the MacBook that just make me wonder why the other companies don't do it the Mac-way. The MacBook is fast, quiet, highly portable, runs OSX and Windows Vista (better than the Dell did, mind you), and just looks freakin' awesome. Apple products are a statement that "I know a better computer when I see one". I never thought I'd say this, but after only a few days of owning this new MacBook, I am a fully-converted Mac user. I can't see myself every buying anything but a Mac again. This is the most enthusiastic I've ever been about a computer...the Mac has just had that much impact on me!
Great Notebook
by Sam on Jan 28th, 2007 at 5:32 PM:
Like every review before me has said this is a fantastic computer for what it costs. It is a typical Mac., everything works seamlessly. The only negatives are: heat of the battery (it gets quite hot) and the when the computer is open teh edge that you rest your hands on is a little sharp. These are minor problems and the Macbook is still better than any PC notebook out there.
