A camera close to a DSLR in performance but not in weight!

by David P. Cheng on Dec 18th, 2007 at 10:38 AM:

I had the H5 for three months and had taken more than 2000 shots with it.

1) Unlike the later models H7 & H9 it handles very well with the manual controls.

2) Fast operation.

3) Takes very sharp pictures with excellent image quality.

4) Low noise up to ISO 200, ISO 400 usable.

5) When framing at 432mm the steady shot really helps.

6) Excellent pictures even in full auto point and shoot mode.

7) Fast lens (F/3.7 at 432mm).

8) Good battery life with two AA's

9) Very good videos.

The shortfalls I noticed are:

1) Slower focusing speed in low light.

2) Inaccurate battery meter.

3) High ISO (>400) not as good.

4) A bit a purple fringing in high contrast areas.

5) no RAW mode.

Amazing LCD screen

I just bought this camera hoping it would fit my needs, and it did. First i looked at an compact camera for hollydays etc. But it soon appeared to me that i wanted someting more. With not a lot of reviews around i went ahead and bought it.

Both the LCD display and viewfinder has over 200K pixels in them. Thats more than any of the competition out there. I also looked at the Panasonic LZ7, but it had slightly worse ISO noise. I can use the Sony's ISO 400 setting, hereafter its all downhill, but the panasonic is horrible after ISO 200.

The Sony DSC-H5 also has a lot of presets if you do not want to mess with shutter settings, and the like. But if you want to, you can change all sorts of settings manualy.

While it is not a D-SLR it stille proves to be a lot better than any of those compacts i tried out.
