Junk

by Matt on May 5th, 2008 at 2:31 PM:

I purchased this phone 2 months ago and am mostly unimpressed.

The battery life is horrible. The internet is okay but does run a little slow. This is the second Motorola phone I've had and I say the same thing about this phone that I said about the other phone...it's the worst phone I've ever had.

Awesome!

I started looking at the Smart Phones 2 years ago and had settled on the Palm Treo 650 for function, comfort & prices. Then while waiting in a doctor's office, I began reading an article giving feedback on Smart Phones. Being a Sprint customer already, I was able to haggle on price & service (internet for $10 a month!) and I am totally satisfied. I can blast my contact list record and photograph my 2 year old & still stay in touch with everyone. My business team members are switching by the dozens.

The camera is as clear as the monitor on my computer.

Awesome!

I've been using my Q for over a year now and have come to love it. Initially it was purchased as an interim device for basic email and web browsing after my laptop was stolen. Since I already had my email accounts set up with hotmail and yahoo prior to using my Q setting up my email on the device was relatively easy due to the automatic setup features. Yes, there are limitations as to what you're able to do with email but this is a mobile phone device first with web features. As with my experiences with my PC's I had to explore the Q's many options not explicitly explained in the user manual. Sure, no one wants to spend the good part of their busy schedule re-tweaking their device but after spending a lazy Sunday afternoon exploring the device features and capabilities I found out exactly what was required to have a hassle free pocket pc available for basic internet use. There are a few secrets that I found to be helpful. First, open start menu and find settings. From settings go to connections. Open connections and find proxy. Open proxy and add from menu. Under Proxy (name: port): type in http:8080. Beneath that for Type choose HTTP. Leave user name and password blank. Connects from: select The Internet and Connects to:WAP Network. Done. Now add another Proxy (name: port) as socks:localhost:1080 . Select Type as Socks4 and Connects from: The Internet and Connects to:WAP Network. Again do not put user name or password in. click done. Now you should have A HTTP and B SOCKS. Click done. Now click menu while proxy is highlighted and select advanced. Leave all as automatic while selecting Menu again and select Options from Menu. Open options and select my desktop connects to The Internet. Select done. Choose done again to exit Connections. Select done from settings and exit Start by selecting Home icon on keypad above e r of the QWERTY keypad. If you have not already setup an email account with Yahoo or Hotmail using a PC then do so before using the email auto setup on your Q. Once you've established your respective accounts with passwords open start on your Q. Go to messaging. Select Outlook E-mail. Select Menu and open Options and select New Account. Now you may wish to add your name (optional) but you must enter your E-mail address, e.g. yourname@ISP.com. Select automatic setup and select next. If you are using an MSN address you will need to now put your user name as yourname@hotmail or msn.com. Yahoo and AOL only require user name without @ISP.com. Key in your password and leave Domain blank but select save paaword and select next. Select Network to be The Internet and select next. Now select Outgoing server requires authentication but do not put user info into Outgoing Server Settings. Select next and unless you have at least 1 gig SD memory card on your device do not select all e-mail but select entire message. Select next. Now be careful as depending on what type of service your cell phone carrier provides for web connections (I have Sprint Power Vision $10 per month only because the Q does not enable Live TV or music streaming on the first model. Yes, I was not happy either!) Select never under Connect automatically and check for messages: so that you do not accrue unnecessary charges from carrier nor tie up your cell broadband which will affect receiving calls. Select next. Select Finish. Now you should be in Account options which will only show Yahoo or AOL IMAP. Hotmail will by default be in your start menu from home screen. Select done in Account options. Select done in Options. Now under menu select highlighted Send/Receive and allow device to connect and retrieve e-mail messages and folders. Hint: Learn how to manage folders under menu by selecting folders, show all folders and then manage folders. Sync only your necessary folders as it will eat up your memory in phone if you sync all folders on your ISP E-mail account. Save that task until you're able to use a PC. Remember, this is a mobile phone for your necessary web needs. You are able to send and receive attachments and even save attached photos or documents to phone memory. But! Remember to Save As to your Storage Card only as your phone will become frozen or sluggish if you use all device and RAM memory unnecessarily. Also, once you've retrieved all your messages close messaging using home icon and select start System Tools and Task Manager. Open Task Manager and select Kill All from menu. Refresh and select exit from Menu. Now all of your icons for the features you've used on phone should be accessible from display screen. Besides everything I've covered there are still a load of features available on the Q that is fantastic. Setup ActiveSync 4.5 on your home PC and explore features of that. Especially syncing all Contacts, calendar, Email and tasks. Media requires a bit more effort but offers option of storing music, picture and video files on memory card. While the Q has an earpiece jack the sound quality on the Q is so-so. Also, Bluetooth offers headset options but again sound quality is at best tinny even with high end Bluetooth headsets.

With all of that said I am fully satisfied with my Q and appreciate the savings for my basic web needs for only $10 via Sprint as opposed to $39.99 through BlackBerry. Invest in Extended life battery with charger and a car charge adapter. This enables a spare battery for backup as web activity eats up your battery time available.

Enjoy and explore the hidden features and capabilities. If you find any you really like post them as I've done so that we all can benefit!

Motorola Q

by Krista Gillespie on Feb 20th, 2008 at 12:21 PM:

I bought the Motorola Q last June and already I'm on my 3rd one. The home screen kept on freezing up on me, the battery would not charge, I could not get the Office Sync downloaded on the phone or the computer to my phone, it shuts itself off.

Do not buy this phone. This is the worst phone I have ever bought.

A very poor phone

by Jack Robertson on Jan 21st, 2008 at 10:19 AM:

I have had my Q for almost two years, well two of them actually because the first one didn't work after a few months. This phone is really a piece of junk. The battery life is horrible. I use the extended battery, still charge it daily and it can't make it through a day. The keys are easily bumped causing the phone do things on its own. The camera key is especially poorly placed and easily bumped. The camera will very rapidly drain your battery. The phone freezes up every once in a while and the only way to restart it is to take the batter y out. Email DOES work fine for me, and the Internet browsing on Verizon's unlimited data plan also works pretty well. While the clarity of the phone calls is great, the Q is not very comfortable to talk on, especially in the summer when it is hot. It's like putting a calculator on your face. Definitely get something else, not this phone.
