Great Camera

by Ken on Sep 28th, 2009 at 11:44 AM:

User Score: 10.png I have had my Sony DSC-S600 for over 2 years and I've shot over 5000 pictures and videos.I'm very pleased with it. I had the same problem with it as the others with it shutting off or not coming on. Fortunately for me electronics was a hobby of mine and my first thought when it stopped working was to change batteries. I took a few pictures and the problem started again. I then 'cleaned' by rubbing the battery contact surfaces in the camera with my finger.

The camera worked again for twenty or so more pictures and started doing the same thing again. When I got home I cleaned all of the electrical contact surfaces including the Ni-Cad batteries with a Q-tip DAMP (NOT WET) with alcohol.

I also used a needle to VERY gently pry up the contacts on the battery compartment cover as it looked like one of them was recessed slightly thereby preventing good contact. That was 4 months ago and it has worked perfect since.

I've found that using my camera in anything less than fairly bright sunshine with the AF light off produced blurry pictures.

I am very happy with this camera for its clear pictures and video that is much better than my old JVC VHS-C video camera.

Absolute Garbage

User Score: 2.png Same problem here - it seems to be a design problem. I bought it brand new and it was stored in a safe very protective case at all times. Used only a couple of times a year. It then developed an intermittent problem with the ON button not operating or only operating erratically when switching between the different picture/movie/view modes. Then it would turn off when the lens was still projecting from the camera body or would come up regularly with a message saying switch the camera off and on again. Then after a while, it just refused to switch on at all. Chews through batteries and is power hungry. Absolute garbage and has a manufacturing flaw with the ON switch. Avoid buying this rubbish - very disappointed.

Worked for about 2.5 years

User Score: 4.png I only used this camera sparingly. Usually I just took pictures of items I wanted to sell on eBay (not a lot of things). After 2.5 years it no longer works. The camera was never abused, dropped, or otherwise mishandled; one day it just refused to turn on.

Worked great for a time, but I guess all things end up dying. It was my first digital camera, so I have no idea how long they're supposed to last. Sony's warranty is for one year, so I guess anything longer than that is a bonus.

Camera is unreliable!!!

User Score: 2.png My wife bought this Sony DSC-S600 about two years ago. I started using it about a year ago when my old kodak quit, and noticed that it seemed to eat batteries. I found that often I could just remove and replace the same batteries and it would work fine...otherwise it would radomly not turn on or not turn off. It now turns on and off at will...IT'S WILL not mine even with new batteries.

Not allowing me to take snaps

by vignesh on Jan 1st, 2009 at 9:48 AM:

User Score: 6.png Hello Sony buyers. Its a very good camera but its works good only for 12 months.I bought this camera for US200$. First i had the shutter problem after 12 months I got it repaired for US 65$ , now its not letting me to take snaps. I use original Sony rechargable batteries ,its eats lots of power from the barrery i guess. When i turn on the camera immediatly the camera shuts down and the lens shutter remains open.Very frustrating model I came across in life.
