Worst Ever

by Anne on Mar 6th, 2008 at 11:47 AM:

I bought this computer from QVC. I have had customer service out 3 times. Customer service has had me on the phone probably 20-30 hours diagnosing the problem, taking apart my computer and asking me to do things. Not like the service they claim - in home service, don't worry! Anyway, I have had the power source, motherboard, I/0 switches (?), memory cards, and all the fans replaced. Now, after the latest blue screen incident they are telling me that it is the hard drive. UGGGH. I will never buy another Dell. Time to save up for a Mac - they cost about the same when you buy an XPS anyway.

Loud Fan Fix!

by Melissa on Mar 3rd, 2008 at 9:42 AM:

An otherwise great computer we put up with the jet engine of a fan with practically no help from dell for a year and a half. With the warranty expired and a new computer on the way I decided to open it up and poke around myself. I took off the heatsink which required the removal of two screws and found the thermal compound that makes contact between the heat sink and CPU chip dried up and not forming a continuous film. This would result in the chip heating up quickly and the fan coming on almost immediately. From there I checked the fan that sits in the front panel. There was a clip on the side and it just jiggled out. It had little rubber feet on the front to stop vibrations between the film and the heat sink, but there were no rubber feet between the fan and the case. I cleaned it up, bought some silicon spray to lube it up, and a rubber edging to go between the fan and the case (make sure you don't use a mat that would block air flow) and put it back in. I also put new thermal contact between heat sink and the CPU chip, screwed everything back in and turned it on... absolutely silent. My first worry was that the fan was now broken, but if I got really close and put my ear against the case I could hear it. I also had some fan control software so I manually put it on max speed and sure enough I could hear it ramping up, but it was still much quieter than before. If you got one of the many XPS200s with a really loud fan I hope this helps you out.

Crashed alot

I had problems with this same machine, and still do. I gave up on tech. support a long time ago because they didn't seem to know much. I would get the blue screen of death; there was a problem with the graphics card. I added a card. Often there is no sound, and I have to reboot.

Very Loud/Overheats!!!

This is a very nice computer, it's very beautiful, but it's very loud, to the point where it is annoying and you want to shut it off, also it overheats and gets very hot to the touch, I had to buy a little tiny fan to put on top of it so it wouldn't overheat and shut off on me. It's a cute computer but completely no worth the noise.

XPS 200 - Junk

by Dana on Feb 11th, 2008 at 2:28 PM:

My problems sound exactly like everyone else overheating, power supply twice, spontaiously shutting down, only my problems started one month after I got it and their technicians screwed around with all their bull@#$% until my warranty was up. I got the better business bureau on them so they sent me a totally different refurbished XPS 200 which is now shutting once or twice a day. I give up! I will never buy a Dell again. I think Dell should stand by their products and call this model a lemon and make it right with all who bought this piece of crap.
