Good for what it is....

I received my DVD-R120 as a free promotion for buying a DLP TV. I would say that for the most part it is what it is. Recording is VERY easy and can be done many ways. I have a moderately large home system that includes an HD box, DVD player, LaserDisc player, this recorder and a receiver. Hooking it up was pretty simple, once I had the right components for the job, it took a total of about 5 minutes.
I recorded a show that I had saved on DVR, so there is absolutely NO problem doing that (just read the manual).... Transporting discs? Well once they are finalized... Transport them... But remember, older DVD players, and even newer ones for that matter, do not play all DVD formats! So if it isn't playing on your DVD player, make sure that your DVD player is supposed to read these formats (DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-Ram). Notice the - and not the +. This is, to me, an unfamiliar format. I have always had to use DVD+R/RW on my computers and those discs read in almost all of my DVD players around the house.
Now on to what I do NOT like. I have HDTv and I want to be able to record the shows I watch on HD channels. For some reason the R120 takes the widescreen idea to a whole new level. It adds these really ugly gray bars across the top and bottom of your HD picture and, well, to me, blows the whole experience. This problem exists not only with recording HDTv, but with watching it through the R120 as well.
So in a nutshell, great unit, easy to use, makes DVDs so that you can save some hardrive space on your tivo or DVR, and overall is a great bargain. Does not record in HD and the picture from HD recordings is of “alright” quality. 7 out of 10.

I have this dvd recorder and it is good so far. One thing most people don't seem to realize is that you have to finalize the dvd for it to be recognized on a different system. this is true of cd's you burn on your computer ( unless you have the same software installed on the other computer). if yuou read the manual it will tell you how to finalize the dvd if you are using dvd-rw thwen after you finalize the dvd and you want ot record on it again at alater date there is an option in the menu that allows you to unfinalize it so you can continue recording on it. the only fault ihave found s that finalize button should be a button on the remote as well as an option in the menu ( in case you lose the remote).
Incompatible WIth Other Players

Got the recorder as a Christmas present. Finally set it up yesterday and recorded two programs from my DVR box. The recordings will not play on all 4 of my other DVD players. They only play on the Samsung recorder. That makes it not very useful for recording shows to be seen on another unit.
Chapter issues

Great unit if you only want to playback on the same deck. If your purpose is to create disks that are portable to other units, this is not the unit you want. It creates chapters at 5 minute intervals when finalizing, but when played on other players that support -R it locks and jumps from chapter to chapter. Only way to break out is to eject the DVD.
