I agree with Brian G and Rich H. My Vaio laptop broke about a two months ago from that time I was looking for a good deal on toshiba laptop and finally I got a super especial deal on this laptop at Circuit City for only $599 after rebate, I'm very happy about $450 saving on this laptop.

Nice package, compact, light weight

I agree with Brian G down there, there isn't really any need for anything faster than 1.5ghz in a notebook. My main consideration was the size of the laptop, it's pretty small compared to the other laptops I've owned in the past. And the price was right compared to a similar Sony which was a little lighter, but also about $750 extra for the same specs, very nice screen (great for dvd's on the road) and the 80gb hard drive is plenty as long as you don't have it loaded up with thousands of music files or games. I just installed another 512mb pc2700 ram and I did not notice a difference in speed, but included 512mb is plenty for every day use. The features it comes with can't be beat, well constructed and thought out. My only gripe is that Toshiba got rid of the Acupoint mouse in the keyboard, and a rear air intake for the processor cooling would be nice, rather than having it on the bottom blocked by your leg while it's on your lap. Good battery life, it's small, and around 5 1/2lbs I believe, makes it a nice deal for $899 at circuit city after rebates of course.

Great Portiable Notebook

This is a great computer; the sound on this notebook is one of the best I have heard in a notebook. Toshiba's on average have great sound, but the forward facing speakers along with the SRS virtual sound give a spectacular performance for this notebook. The 80 GB Hard dive is fast, and the screen is a TruBrite which is exactly equal to an XBrite screen in other notebooks.
The 14" is more intended to increase mobility and reduce weight, and it utilizes a widescreen format (1280 by 768). The downside of having this widescreen format is that other resolution like 1024 by 768 or 800 by 600 are stretched to fill the screen and this distorts the image on screen. There is an option to preserve aspect ratio but it turns off the sides of the screen and centers the screen to a minuscule 12”. Basically, you have to keep the screen in a 1280 by 768 format which is very crisp and clear. Another downside is Toshiba doesn’t really give you a user manual, they just give a couple booklets tell you what in exact words they are NOT Liable for, which from reading it sounds like everything. So, on that note, I recommend getting and extended warranty from a reputable retailer if you’re not careful, because it seems that Toshiba will try to avoid fixing their computers. The design is intuitive and ergonomic, the lightweight is great and overall the computer operates excellently for the price. The features such as S-Video, VGA, 4 USB, wireless B/G, Double Density DVD recorder, Modem, Ethernet, and hot swap ports all make this comp comparable to high end notebook, the scarifies is just the processor speed, which during mobile applications will be stepped down anyways to conserve batteries.
My personal opinion is that and average person only really needs 1GHz to 1.5GHz even for demanding applications and multitasking. The 2GHz & 3GHz computers are just for extreme users like gamers and people running demanding apps, otherwise Intel & AMD pushed the higher end processors and used its marketing ploys to make it seem like the normal user needed the extra processing power when really they do not!! What I am trying to say is that there is NO noticeable speed difference between a 1.7 GHz, 1.5 GHz. Saying that, paying an extra $200 to $300 for a extra 20GB and a processor that performs exactly the same does not justified the price difference, I mean between the M55-135 & the M55-235. The only really significant difference in a computers operational speed comes from the RAM and the 135 & 235 have exactly the same amount 512MB.)
I recommend this computer highly for travelers or business men who want a notebook to work on the road and want something light to bring around without sacrificing any features. Furthermore, the M55-135 is a better value over the M55-235, the 1.7GHz & 100 GB hard drive does not justify the price difference between the two identical models.
I am a technology guy and that is my opinion.
