I dont know where these guys live but in CAlifornia Dishnetwork is great. They have helped me and the turn around time an equipment was fast.
Dish Network has HORRIBLE Service

I have 2 account with dish at my house and when I call to have something fixed I have to wait for 3 weeks at the least. Wish I could change to Direct TV without having to switch all of my equipment.
Wouldn't doubt dish would charge!

Have had dish for a few years, can't say I'm impressed. But, would cost money to switch to Direct so I'm stuck. Have had pretty crappy 1 on 1's with Dish

The fees are not hidden they are in the contract. The phone fee makes sense as well. If you had 2 separate receivers you would have the fee with dual tuners they try to cut you a break by waiving the fee if you keep the phone line in. So in reality it is not an extra fee at all. Also if you live in an area where you can use an off air antenna to get local stations you can use this receiver for them. It does not take extreme tech know how to do this, a 6 year old kid could probably do it
