Used to be great all-around, now only good indoors

by Karen on Nov 30th, 2008 at 12:13 AM:

I purchased this camera when it debuted in 2005. From then until now, the camera did not see alot of heavy usage and was never dropped or banged against anything. To my dismay, about 6 months ago, the pictures taken outdoors in bright sunlight are VERY overexposed. I thought it was a white balance issue - nope. I tried using the bright sunlight setting - no help. So I took it to be repaired today and was told that it was a lens problem and that Sony would have to replace the lens to the tune of $195 minium for repair cost. So today I purchased a new DSC-W120 for only $129 on sale. I went with Sony again because my past Sony cameras and PCs and Walkmans have always performed well. The P200 was just a dud for me.

All round great camera

Sony have produced a very good camera that takes excelent pictures. Still playing around with the manual features which there are plenty of. Have owned this camera for 2 months now with no problems ... wish there was a USB direct from the camera so that you won't need the docking station though.

not so good

I was thrilled to see how this camera performs under low light conditions and the colour mapping is very much ok.This is a very good camera for close-ups.You can print poster size if u take images with maximum resolution. Its packed with all good features but......

here are the problems..

a) Slightest shake and pictures go blurred if you are not using flash.

b) Battery section is too weak and could be easily broken.

c) 3X optical zoom is not at all enough for capturing greater details for objects far. If you are interested in not just poster size prints go for a camera with >= 10X optical zoom (5 Mpixel should do)

d) The lens mechanical support got broken when it happened to hit a rod with little
force and got misplaced.I visited nearest sony service and to my disappointment they said it will require a lens change and will cost me $300 without even opening
and analyzing the damage.I had bad experiences with sony service centres earlier too.

So now after six months of regular usage my camera has finally found its way to the dustbin.

Still best camera on the market.

I have purchased the sony DSCP200 back in March when it came out, after doing a good month and half of research. From what I've seen it is still one of the best cameras out on the market right now. I am still so happy I bought it: The picture quality and resolution is great, it's small and it has a ton of features. It goes everywhere with me. The video is very good too, 640 x 480 with Memory stick pro (set on fine quality). A professional camera for anyone who loves photography. Take advantage of it's manual mode. Can't go wrong with this one. Get a tripod and a 1gb memory stick and you're set!
Pros:
- compact
- 7 megapixel and great picture quality
- point & shoot camera
- strong enough flash
- 640 x 480 good video
- plenty of features
- manual mode
- even cheaper now!

Cons:
- autofocus not good in bad lighting
- takes a while to learn
- lens can get dirty underneath if not taking good care (get a good case)
