Great Card - ATI site not so great
by Fred64 on Nov 3rd, 2005 at 1:01 AM:
Cable TV, FM tuner and pvr work well. The gemstar TV listings component works, but could be better. For example, if you click on a program title for more details, it switches your channel to the station that program is listed under. The listing updates take some time as well.
The remote control works, but the response was very sluggish (I have a 2.0ghz Celeron). Since I'm not using my PC as an HTPC, I really don't need the remote, so I don't use it much and haven't invested much time trying to get it working better.
The included Pinnacle software was ver 8 and a bit clumsy for video editing. I think its a come on to get you to buy a newer version from Pinnacle.
However, the card integrates nicely with Windows media editon, which is free from the microsoft site (at least for WinXP). That works fine for what I do in terms of video editing.
You need latest software and drivers from the ATI site. Unfortunately, when I used it in early 2005, it was very confusing. The software download and installation is very confusing. Took multiple attempts to get it all working together. They are not clear about the components, what they do, what is optional, what is required, or the order in which they need to be installed. It all creates issues that can force you to uninstall the whole kaboodle and start over.
Took me about 4 tries and one helpful E-Mail from one of their tech support folks to get it working. He told me what I could ignore and what order to install the components.
I don't understand how people smart enough to make such nice hardware, can do such a poor job on their support site and support software descriptions and instructions.
Once all is said and done, the important parts work as advertised.
