DRU-710A - Dont waste your money

by Robert Sans on Nov 21st, 2007 at 10:22 AM:

I am so disappointed with this drive - no... I am beyond disappointed. I have barely used it and now it's not recognizing blank CDs. I've updated the firmware to BYX5, updated the ASPI SW as well (this fixed the problem the last time) but nothing this time. I can burn DVDs (it seems to recognize the Maxell brand of blank DVDs but not the Maxell brand of CDs!). So I can't burn CDs -using Roxio or Nero. Last time for anything from SONY. And yes... their support sucks!

Slow and died early in life

The speed on this drive was not as fast as advertised, I only used it occasionally and have probably burnt less than 100 cds and under 25 DVDs and yet it stopped detecting CDs (for now the DVD still works). What really gets me is that the support staff at Sony acts like they don't know what is up. I have seen several similar posts on different sites so I have decided to go forth and proclaim that I won't be buying anything Sony for a while and that's a pity because they use to make good equipment.

fast but hardware unreliable

I have had 2 of these now, with both breaking the same exact way shortly after installation. the first was on warranty and replaced, the second was not, so I am tossing it. After a while it stops being able to detect CDs first then DVDs later.

Fast & stable with Nero update

by J. Cannon on Feb 14th, 2005 at 11:41 AM:

Easy to install, very quiet drive. However, the included Nero 6 Ultra software is annoyingly erratic. Nero has a Major Upgrade (Feb '05) - 6 executable files that should be downloaded, saved and installed. Be prepared for a 7 hour download unless you have fast internet access, but it is well worth the time & trouble!

Works Great!!!

I am a Linux guy. And, some times it cam be hard to find hardware that works perfectly right out of the box. It seems like I am always screwing with a configuration file. But in this case,it worked perfectly! I plugged it up and started up K3B, and I was burning DVD's in no time. I have not tried XCDRoast. However, It s a little slower than advertised. Not much though. DVD-R's burn at 7.82x not 8x.
