Impressive job of scanning old slides

This is my first experience with a slide scanner and I am more than pleased with the photo files I have made from 35mm slides, some of them 50 years old. The User's Manual, however, has a serious mistake (pages 3 and 6) which had me about ready to ship the machine back to the supplier. The instructions make it sound as though it makes no difference whether the scanner sits on one side or on the base. But when scanning slides it must be on the base or an error message frequently appears saying that "Autofocus has failed....." Nikon Technical Services was helpful but did not know about this particular technicality.
