Not having fun yet
by Mesarift on Aug 19th, 2007 at 10:02 PM:
I had no setup problems and have had this drive for a while, but it is SLOW to burn a DVD. Plus, only about 4 out of 9 times will a DVD I've created with this burner actually be able to play on any other DVD device. Pretty freakin' sad.
Very good drive

I do not understand how these people are
having the problems they are, the drive
was a breeze to install, configure, and
update the ROM. I, myself didn't use the
version of Nero that was included. I have
the 6.6 updated full retail version. NOW
onto the discs, I bought from CompUSA the
cheapest -R they had. I, as of this
writing have YET to have a single coaster
The only thing I can figure is that the
End-Users aren't propertly initalizing the drive, meaning not following Sony's manual for installing the ROM Update.
The jury is still out

I had no problems with installing Nero; however, multiple Memorex 4x DVD-R disks were not recognized by the drive, while they work fine in my old Sony DRU-500A internal IDE drive. BTW, both drives have the latest firmware installed. I ran Sony's DriveCheck and reported the resulting error to Sony tech support yesterday -- we'll see if they respond.
Best piece of hardware sony made!

Well the first two persons are retarded... first of all the firmware only updates the drive, it's windows that recognizes the drive as a DRU unit (which is fine because the drivers are the same). Secondly the drive functions perfectly, and has both Firewire (4pin and 6pin) and USB 2.0 wich makes it perfect for fast recording. I found that it made coasters out of a few (like 10 dvd's all from same pack) but it turns out that the pack was defected. The installation was a breeze, you don't even need to install if you already own a dvd authoring/burning program. For instance I already owned Nero 6.6 ultimate edition so I didn't need to install the OEM version supplied by Sony. Same goes for Roxio or Ulead or any other third party software.
Again this drive gets my highest recommendation, especially for laptops.
