Harmony 659 Remote

by Dan Ferguson on Dec 31st, 2008 at 10:29 PM:

Purchased this at Sam's club for $75. Looked like a good deal and it was. I'm 66 and a mechanic but reasonably technical. Software loaded without problems and programing was fairly easy. I have an old Kennwood amp, KAV7000,with twelve inputs. Harmony even had the settings for this old amp. Only had to 'learn' one input. This remote picks the right input for the amp or TV and turns on all associated equipment when you select what you want to do, watch tv, play dvd, listen to radio and all. I use the VCR or the cable box to change channels all I have to do is pick "watch cable" or "watch TV" and the remote does the rest. Like anything there is a learning curve. At least the wife can turn on the TV now and wants to buy one for our adult son! Can't beat the price for what you get. Harmony has a touch screen for about $500 if you really want to get serious!

Satisfied Consumer

I love my 659. It took me literally 30 minutes from taking it out of the box, program it to total appreciation.

My setup is pretty simple as such that I have an HDTV, Bell HD box, HD DVD and home theater surround system. I was running 4 remotes, 1 to turn on the TV and set it to the right input, then the receiver remote for volume and the Bell or DVD remote depending on what I was watching. I setup the macros to correctly identify watch audio setting I want for TV and DVD. I love it!!!!!

You may not like it

This remote concept is great but the reality is that it's operation is not that great. The good parts are that it does operate many devices with the push of one button, but sending commands to the device you are commanding is sometimes slow especially when you first turn the devices on. Logitech is eager to help and have gone out of their way at times to contact me to make sure all is well. They do have a good system to help program the remote on line. While their attempts have been valiant, the remote is inconstant working fine they are on the phone and then working not as well when first turned on. The fact of the matter is that these problems are frustrating especially when you are ready to sit down at the end of the day to relax and watch some tube. So while I do like the not having many remotes to work with this one does take some work which you may not like to do. If you are not a techie or computer literate, then I would stay away from this unit. So for all the times it has taken to get this working ok. I give it an average rating.

The Harmony 659 is a great choice for those looking for an all in one remote. From button placement to solid feel, this remote should prove the right product for nearly all. Although Logitech claims a simple setup procedue, I have had to call technical support on more than one occasion to fine tune the product. One that has never had a similar device will be amazed at actually what can be programmed in making this more than just a luxury item but a neccessity.

Waste of Time

Spent several hours just trying to get it to correctly control a Hitachi TV. It keeps incorrectly selecting Ant B, Help fixes the problem but this correct the macro. Not real impressed at this point in time
