Maxtor 6Y120P0 SUCKS D*CK

by Jeremy on Apr 1st, 2006 at 8:45 AM:

I've had three of these drives fail. One drive sat around in the box for about a year and plugged it in to find that it was DOA. Unfortunately, the warranty is only good for one year so I am out of luck and out of 360 GB of valueable home videos. I even sent the drives a clean room to be recovered but that didn't even work. I'll never buy Maxtor again. I'm sticking with Western Digital from now on.

"Mines worked great so far"

I've had maxtor hard drives for over 9 years and compared with other makes I've not had one fail. The drives may run hot which could cause problems in poorly ventilated machines, I've 2 HD fans cooling it + 2 case inlet and 2 exhaust fans. I've now had the drive for 2 1/2 years with no problems yet.

Just had my 3rd one fail

Someone else mentioned that the drives run hot. Mine ran hot as well.

Fast, quiet, and so far reliable...

Bought this drive about a year ago, and so far (crossing my fingers) it's been reliable but seems to run on the hot side (has internal temperature sensor)so good case ventilation is recommended. Also have a Maxtor 5T040H4 (40 gig) for 3 years now but shows signs of fatigue (sometimes fails to spin when powered-up according to S.M.A.R.T).

It might not be the best, but it's inexpensive, and Maxtor has a good customer service (a friend had a defective HD replaced within 2 days).
Frequent back-ups might be a wise thing to do, just in case...
