Trying to get it to work first...

by Phenderson on Oct 4th, 2005 at 7:03 AM:

I traded a nice case with mods, a CPU, some ram, and a 160 gig harddrive, to someone for this laptop. He had already broken the Power plug, so I bought a new one from ebay for $7.00 and installed it after removing what seemed like a million screws. When I put it all back together again, somehow, someway, I had 3 extra screws. Since I have replaced the power plug (6 hours of work alone), I have tried re-installing the OS, or even a Windows XP OS. When I install the original factory CD's. It gets to a point where it finishes but when it goes to restarted, it stops in the middle of the install. That means, I am presented with as screen, upon Windows XP startup, that says "OS installation not complete, please re-run setup". Now when I try install Windows XP Pro, it overheats and shuts down, which is truly annoying because I don't even want to think about how much damage that this is doing to the harddrive. Someone please e-mail me to and clue me in on some mods for this laptop outside of thermal paste, that will help it run cooler...

Get the BIOS Update

by mod3049 on Sep 20th, 2005 at 7:16 PM:

I agree that the machine bites at first. If you are willing to mod then it becomes a good machine. I alos did a mod to the heat transfer which helped but te best mod is to update (flash) the BIOS, which is a bit tough since the ZE1250 has no floppy - bummer. Buy or borrow a USB floppy, flash the BIOS and the lock up is gone, the heat is reduced (its still is WARM), and the machine runs stable.

ZE1250 Heat Transfer

by scott_a_me on Aug 24th, 2005 at 4:03 PM:

The ZE1250 really is a troublesome notebook computer so I agree with all of the previous 11 reviews. However I thought you might want to know part of the problem, at least with my ze1250, is poor manufacture. I disassembled it, removed the heatpipe from the processor, and found poor distribution of thermal paste. With a bit of Arctic Silver 5, I was able to triple the TBC (Time Between Crashes!).

Not that this is much consolation to other victims of this product.

Almost a decent laptop

With a fresh install of xp this system freezes for no apparent reason. It will perform just fine for a day or two and out of the blue it will just start hanging with absolutely nothing running. Get it at a very deep discount only.

Noisy fan is extremely annoying

by Kevin on Jul 17th, 2005 at 11:16 PM:

Only buy this thing if...well...don't don't pay a cent for it. It always overheats, and as a result the fan comes on all the time and is absurdly loud. It is always on when it is running a DVD or CD in the CD-rom. Also, it frequently locks up, and that also bothers me. Lastly, it takes forever to start up - this machine is pretty slow.
So - 1. noisy fan, 2. freezes up all the time, and 3. runs too slowly. Don't get it.
