Inferior prodict, customer service

by S. Hayes on Mar 31st, 2006 at 8:46 AM:

None of our units proved durable enough to use anywhere else but at home using headphones, connected through USB to the computer, or to the TV/Stereo using the line out. After going through the reviews last year, we initially purchased a matched set of these for two teenagers for Christmas '04. The first unit was DOA out of the box - the seller replaced it, no problem. We since have had the other original unit replaced, and then the replacement replaced, due to the known headphone jack problems. This was after lengthy phone calls with RCA customer service and a lot of run around on the first replacement. Now, the replacment for the original DOA has the same headphone jack problem AND will no longer connect to external power and charge. RCA initially said they'd replace it as well, but after 3 weeks with no communication or replacement delivery from RCA, we called back and were informed that there are no replacements in the system to send. A refund was offered with a 6-8 week turnaround. RCA/Thompson signed for the Lyra on 12/19/05. On 3/21/06 we were informed that the refund was finally approved and to expect another 6-8 weeks for a check... This was definitely "not ready for prime time product". After the customer service exerience, I would not recommend an RCA/Thompson product to anyone.

Works great

It seems pretty obvious that most of you giving bad ratings are probably just a bunch of computer illiterate people. With just a little bit of learning and exploration this thing is awesome.

Not for beginners!!!!

This can be tough to operate, but if you know what you are doing, it works fine. The video compressin is a pain though.

Great Player, can it be expanded?

I really love the player. As the other reviewer says you can unplug the DVD in for 8 seconds after hitting Play and you'll be able to record macromedia DVDs.

If you update to the latest firmware there are very few errors on playback, it can play much more than my Archos unit.

20GB=18,600 MB formatted, after all. I've already filled mine up. Anyone tried our this upgrade service: http://store.maxedmp3players.com/80gblyra.html??? $399 for 80GB or more would be great if they work.

DVD Recording

by Myles G. on May 21st, 2005 at 8:12 PM:

As you may know recording a DVD or VHS on the RCA Lyra can be quite confusing, first off, it’s copyright protected and goes back to recording screen after 10 seconds. Hint hint. Well here’s a trick, play the movie up to 8 seconds while recording it on your Lyra, once it gets to 8 seconds take out the cord that’s in the “line in” then wait till it gets to 11 seconds, plug it back in, and walla you can now record the rest of the movie!
