Reliable but nothing dazzling

by Blair Finney on Apr 25th, 2008 at 9:38 PM:

Well, for a five year old laptop, mine has done well... It crashed a LOT less than my previous Gateway....

Runs HOT HOT HOT (cannot run it on your lap or you get burned) despite cleaning heat sink, and the fans get quite noisy...

I will also agree that their charger design was bad- tends to break off near where it plugs into the computer. If I were so inclined to replace it again, I would be ordering my third charger. But I'm retiring this computer after needing to buy a third new keyboard as well.

At this point, this machine is pretty well obsolete, IMO...

Great laptop

I've had my 1100 for nearly 4-years and it gets quite a bit of use. I had to replace the battery last year and the power cord last month. I found both OEM parts on Ebay at very reasonable prices. I am going to add another 512 MB of memory and expect to be using it for another 3-years before I think about buying a new system. I recommend this machine.

Dell computers

Dell power cords break easily (Inspiron 1100)

This is my 3rd power cord! Very flimsy design.

Lid and hinges had to replace twice.

Keyboard sticks. But you get what you pay for. If you can afford better, buy it.

Also have Dell desktop. Monitor power cord had to replace also.

I have had problems with Dell's power cords, but the computers are okay for the price you pay for them.

Dell Laptops Overheating issues and Lawsuits

by Jack on Jan 1st, 2008 at 11:38 AM:

Dell is being sued by owners of Inspiron 1100 and other models because of a design flaw. The NY State Attorney general's office is suing as well. Here's the links.

My machine has had light use and it finally became symptomatic. I am really annoyed. I may sign up for the class action suit. The machine itself is very pokey with the ram it came with and only recently got a bit faster when I installed more ram. I am not impressed with it but was more or less satisfied that it used to do the limited functions I needed. Now it is undependable. I hope Dell makes this right. It shows what kind of company they are that they have to be sued to do the right thing. I'm buying only Macintosh machines from now on. Since they can run windows, there should be no reason to buy any other brand.

Overheats so much you can use it as a Bunsen burner

by JD Brooks on Feb 25th, 2007 at 1:11 PM:

This laptop is great for Chemists, but only b/c it's usable as a Bunsen burner.

Cleaning the heat sink/fan didn't help me, but perhaps a replacement might. At any rate, after problems with my Compaq laptop (2000), and then my Dell Inspiron (2003), I made the switch to Apple, and got an iMAC. This thing is an outstanding machine.
