Good at first, dissapointing later

This model is really bad. It is true that during the first year, performance was quite satisfying (gaming was pleasant too) but then this thing opened for me the gate to insanity. Apart the fact that it is illegal to call it a "laptop" since you can not have it on your laps (it will crisp you up!), i got one problem after another:
1. heating problems: oh yes, the famous problem concerning many other Satellite models (i.e. A75) got me too. The computer shuts off for NO apparent reason (well, it is apparent if you spent days on the internet looking it up)
2. The CD driver cannot read many data DVDs.
3. the battery went dead and cannot be recharged.
4. Apparently, a few days ago, i found that the keyboard is sticky and typing is volatile
5. During a recording experiment, i found out that the sound card is problematic and only mono sound came out because of a bad connection
Toshiba's are very poorly designed. Google before you buy and save yourself from the desperation.
Average performance, sometimes...

Everyone in my class was required to buy this laptop upon enrollment in my high school freshman year. Problems came up with these computers within the first month of owning them; there is a flaw in the design such that the mouse keys touch the screen when closed, eventually creating two spots of dead pixels on the screen. The memory is not stellar and the battery life is about an hour and a half tops. Nearly all of my classmates, including myself, have had multiple serious problems with the hardware. Personally, the screen has required replacement twice, the power cord has failed three times, and I am currently waiting for a new fan and hard drive to replace my third faulty one. The monitor is not very bright and the screen is nearly impossible to work on outdoors or in direct sunlight. While running several programs or watching a DVD, the computer can burn you it gets so hot if it is on your lap. Some pros are quick CD burning, when the drive is functioning, a large screen, and the pretty blue color of the outside. I do not recommend this computer to anyone who cannot afford either an expensive warranty (which does not cover replacing old batteries), or the continuous repairs and hardware replacements necessary to keep it running. This computer is probably best for an at home or office portable PC. Running Windows XP, this has not been very durable or reliable at all for student use- bringing it to and from school each day.
Great with linux, just 2 details

Not a single problem with Ubuntu Linux. Moves games not too bad, good for productivity/office. Give it a 512 extra ram expansion and it's perfect for non-hardcore-gamer users. Maybe just two details: the battery live is just nearly an hour at most, and it gets really hot when gaming: 30 minutes of "Quake 3" pumps it to 70ºC and keeps it there, fan at full speed. Just remember cleaning the dust of the heat sink every month or so and it will serve you for years. Very proud owner.
Great notebook!

Light, good looking, reliable, and good performance. The celeron 2.0Ghz is no slouch, in benchmarks for games such as farcry, this processor beat the pentium 4 3.4GHz. The 256mb Ram on my notebook is adequate and the graphics are fair and can play games pretty decently.
